Module 2 Overview Introduction Becoming aware of specific factors that impact the health of a community is one of the first steps taken before developing a program to address the health related needs of a community. This awareness starts with riding, driving, or walking around in a specific community of interest. A community assessment is a detailed description of a specific community and the people who live in that community. This process is called a windshield survey, which is done by riding and/or walking through a community and using all of your senses. A windshield survey is one component of conducting a community assessment. Various community assessment frameworks can be used to evaluate the strengths and deficits within a community. Many people view and define communities based on what is missing or not available in the community. A framework that is often used by the public health sector is the community assets model, however, there are many other frameworks that can be used to assess the health of a community. As you move about in your personal community take notice of things that might have an impact of the health of people in your area. Advertisements on billboards and signs, even graffiti can have an impact on the health of a community. You may be surprised to learn that many things, which on the surface do not appear to play a role in the health of a community, may significantly impact the health of a community. For example, communities that have a significant number of accessible bike and walking paths have a lower prevalence of obesity.
