Address how these determinants of health contribute to the global burden of disease and how they contribute to health disparities pertaining to your target population

Module 3 Overview Introduction We now live in a borderless society, meaning geographic boundaries no longer exist in the same way boundaries may have been defined during your grandparents or great grandparents’ lives. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that in 2016 alone, 823.0 million passengers traveled by air (Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 2017). Many factors such as social, economic, personal behavior and environment can influence the health status of a population. These factors are often referred to as ‘determinants of health’, which can contribute to health disparities and the global burden of disease. Healthy People 2020, a document you may be familiar with, was developed to address these and other factors and has organized into 38 key topic areas goals towards helping people to achieve a higher quality of life and longer life spans free of preventable diseases. Based on three levels of prevention, community/public health nurses address Healthy People 2020 objectives by working with community members and others to develop programs to help reach these goals. Learning Objectives After completing this module, you will be able to: •Examine determinants of health that have global impact •Apply the three levels of prevention Reading & Resources •Harkness & DeMarco (2016) Read Chapters 4 & 5 •Review the Module 3 Lecture •Visit World Health Organization – Determinants of Health ◦Visit Healthy People 2020 Determinants of Health ◦Visit Healthy People 2020 Objectives ◦Visit Health Disparities •Find the health rankings for the county where your practice learning site is located by visiting: “Health Rankings for Your State & County” •Watch the Levels of Prevention Video Learning Activities •Discussion: Participate in Discussion 3. •Assignment: Submit Assignment 2. Click on the Assignment 2 link for more details. Discussion 3 Discuss two ‘determinants of health’ that impact your target population. Address how these determinants of health contribute to the global burden of disease and how they contribute to health disparities pertaining to your target population. What is the health ranking for the county where your practice learning site is located? Identify a health concern that impacts your target population for which you will develop an intervention and your rationale for selecting this problem. Include a community health nursing diagnosis that meets one of the Healthy People 2020 objectives. Discuss which level of prevention you would use to address this health concern and include your rationale for the level of prevention you selected. Include at least 2 scholarly references – 1 reference should be from a peer-reviewed professional journal published within the past 7 years. See the Nursing Syllabus Standards & Policies Document for Discussion Participation Guidelines & Grading Criteria.
