It should be 3-4 minutes long, not including the question time at the end.

Choose a topic that fascinates you. You may think of your own idea. What do you feel strongly about? Think about what would be useful to your classmates at this time. For example, maybe they don’t know how to cook and can’t get food at restaurants. Maybe you have a great idea about how to be less lonely when things have changed. Maybe you have an idea about how to be mentally healthy. Stories!!!

SOME of these topics may be appropriate if you can’t think of anything, but many are kind of dumb: http://www.speechideas.net/how-to-speech-ideas.htm…

ALWAYS think about your audience and what they might be interested in or need to know.

-Don’t just give a data dump. Don’t ever forget that audiences love stories! Be creative. You could show a short video of yourself demonstrating something if it’s too hard to show online. You may choose to use humor. Try to have fun with this! We need some fun!

-It is OK if you and your former partner/group present on the same topic, especially if you already started preparing before Spring Break. You will have different stories and different styles.

-Ask Jennifer if your topic is OK BEFORE you start preparing.
-Always think about Plan B in case something doesn’t go the way you hope.

-It doesn’t have to be perfect. This is a new world, doing presentations online. We will figure it out together. We will be forgiving.

Guidelines:

-You should use an awesome hook and give a definite and positive conclusion. This has not changed!

-Practice smooooooooth transitioning from one section to the next. (“And now I will explain _____.”)

-Don’t be a slave of your notes. DON’T READ!!! We will still be able to tell if you are reading, even though it is online!

-Try to imagine and prepare for what your classmates might ask you about after your presentation. There will be a Q and A! The Q and A will not be graded; it is for practice only.

-Prepare a handout that you upload. This handout should contain written text with the steps of your how-to portion. This should be well-written and professional. Don’t just copy it off the internet; write it with the audience in mind.

-ALWAYS think of your audience for both the presentation and the handout. Does your audience know the vocabulary you are using? Don’t use jargon they won’t understand; if you do need to use some technical vocabulary, explain, illustrate, or demonstrate it first. Assume your audience knows nothing.
