-Identify the role of patient safety and the influence on the Federal initiatives that are used to prevent unintentional death as a result of medical mistakes. -Message from the professor Hi Class, Quality care also incorporates the standards of care from agencies such as the ANA, JCAHO, regulatory agencies such as the health department. There is specific terminology used in this process. A Benchmark is a specific quantitative standard; usually it is the highest standard or Gold Standard. These can be used with any type of evaluation system to establish the standard for an outcome. The aim is to meet or exceed the benchmark. QA- Quality Assurance audits and tracks the occurrence of untoward incidents, and is distributed those who need to know. This is an objective review and blame, conjecture etc. is not part of the process. An example would be a root cause analysis. QI- Quality Improvement- movement or performance improvement movement incorporates all the activities of QA and moves beyond them to include a wide variety of programs aimed at improving the quality of health care. Risk management minimized the risk or the institution or agency from an error or problem that could result in legal action or liability. Safety committees play a big role in risk management. Be proactive in risk management! Understanding of all the concepts related to evaluation will be of personal use to you in evaluating the nursing care in which you participate. You can identify specific standards of care that you will strive to meet and determine ways of improving care. Standards of care will be an ongoing, evolving process that will be throughout your nursing career. Be active in creating acceptable standards of care!
