Respond to this post by Nathan 4. How has Berlin fared in the 30 years since? What issues has reunification caused? What lessons can we learn from reunification? I would say that Berlin itself has fared very well since reunification, but East Germany as a whole is having a tougher time of it. Basically, the East Germans feel that the West Germany is in charge of Germany as a whole, and many of the East Germans have lower paying jobs and a lot less say in governing the country. At the time of reunification, the West Germans essentially took over East Germany, because East Germany was broke and the West had to pay for everything. Also, when Germany was reunified many of the former jobs in East Germany disappeared, which furthered the economic disparity and is a factor in why East Germany is relatively poor in comparison to the West. However, East Germany never caught on economically, so the West still runs things. This is illustrated by a quote from Peter Craven on to the Point “Many in East Germany say they’ve been left behind and feel like second class citizens.” What lesson can we learn from this? Well, I suppose the lesson to be learnt here is that nothing is perfect. The reunification of Germany was nothing short of a miracle for many people, and no one would have believed it was possible even just a few years before it occurred. It signaled the end of Soviet oppression in Germany, and was a huge step forward in terms of liberty for East Germans. However, now they feel underrepresented and feel like West Germany is running the show. So you always have to look at even major achievements in politics realistically, and know that there are always going to be pros and cons to every decision and some people are going to benefit at others expense.
