There have been numerous stories published in large newspapers discussing problems associated with the so called “Killer Molds” and the impacts on families living in homes with these molds. The public outcry has moved some states, most notably California, to pass legislation (The Toxic Mold Protection Act of 2001) which is intended to protect the public from these molds, and provide for remediation. Health Impact Assessments can be used to evaluate the impact of Mold removal and remediation on improving the public’s health (A Health Impact Assessment is defined as the estimation of the effects of an action on the health of a certain population). Given that there has yet to be developed a valid test to determine exposure to mold toxins, what is your opinion about these laws? Are they premature? Has there been sufficient research to establish regulatory statutes? Do the laws protect the public’s health, according to impact reports?
