Discuss the potential conflicts between nationalist ideals and liberal ideals

The questions this week might take a bit of time to mull over, but you should use this week and the upcoming break to work on them a little here or there. I am not expecting quite as much of an output as usual this week — as we just finished the Midterm, and are starting in to reading Dracula — but I still expect well formed answers to these questions. 1. Discuss the potential conflicts between nationalist ideals and liberal ideals. 2. What was the ‘Chartist’ movement? What were their demands? And why did their opponents see them as dangerous? 3. Why is the issue of the German states so important to the settlement at Vienna, according to Langhorne? Would the next century of European politics played out differently if Germany had been left out? Why or why not? 4. What was the purpose of the ‘Secret’ articles (end of p.5 and p. 6) between the powers at the end of the Napoleonic Wars? Do you think these measures were successful or not?
