2. The painting “Wounded Soldier” by Otto Dix depicts a skeletal soldier amidst a lot of debris from the war. The coloring is black and white, indicating a darkness or bleak feeling. His body looks mangled, his face in clear distress, and he probably will not survive this shot to the chest. What this art depicts is the sad reality for most soldiers in WWI- an end to their lives in a painful way, almost without any true meaning as to why they needed to die in such a way. When I look at this painting, I feel such sadness to see such fear in the soldier’s eyes, and it evokes a strong feeling of empathy. I sort of wonder if those young men thought, “Is this it?” in that current moment. Knowing the amount of cases that returned home never quite the same because of PTSD, or shell shock, perhaps those who died were better off having died for their country rather than never being the same man again, in a morbid sense.
