Adolescents Challenges

Use in the Adolescents today live in a challenging world(use a reference). What adolescent concerns have you witnessed around you (in your school, church, family(please use this topic) that may have been fueled by adolescents’ 24/7 access to technology? As an Nurse Practitioner, how can you address an emotional, social, or developmental impact of this concern?

As a mother of two teenage girls and one preteen boy, I have witnessed the effects that technology has on adolescents firsthand. One concern that I witnessed is insufficient sleep. During a school week, if I forget to take my children’s cell phones and tablets from them at bedtime, they would stay up late. When they wake up in the morning for school, they are tired, grumpy, and groggy; which affects their performance at school. According to Owens (2014), sleep deprivation is a serious threat to adolescent’s academic performance, health, and safety; the risks of depression, obesity, and sleep-induced accidents among adolescents increase.

In practice, advanced practice nurses (APNs), can educate adolescents/parents on the importance of sleep and how it impacts academic performance, health, and safety. APNs can include sleep questionnaires in the assessment that can aid in identifying the social, emotional, or developmental risks of sleep deprivation. APNs can encourage the parents/guardians to implement lifestyle modifications such as putting a time limit on the use of electronic devices, setting an early bedtime, and encouraging physical activity (Chaput&Dutil, 2016). APNS can also refer patients to a sleep specialist, as needed.
