TOPIC: Social Development Practice

The final (second) assessment for this course is a substantive assignment, in which you are required to demonstrate your thinking about the way in which social work practices can be used in social development.

The elements that you should include are:

  1. a very short summary of the social development issue on which you are focusing – unless there is a very good reason to make a change, this should be the issue that you addressed in the briefing paper (if you do wish to use a different issue, please discuss with either Maree or Natasha);
  2. a summary of the social work practice, or practices, that you think apply to this issue (you can draw on other BSW(Hons) courses, but do not make it too complicated for yourself by trying to include too much – and please make sure you can locate the practices within your understanding of social work);
  3. you can illustrate your discussion by referring to published accounts of what social workers do (or did) in particular types of social development work;
  4. to present an understanding the contribution social workers can make in a social development field. In short: “what can social workers do in this aspect of social development?” Bear in mind that some practices may also be done by other professions – that’s ok, but do social workers claim those practices?

You will need to use literature (including published reports) as sources for much of this assignment.

A frequent question is “how many references should I use?”, to which the immediate answer is “enough”. However, it is difficult see that less than 5 will be enough, and certainly more than 15 is like to be way too much (and often becomes “padding”). Reading too many references can be as much a problem as reading too few, as it can take up too much of your time for no gain.

Please do not use too many web sites, as a lot of them are really PR or just very superficial. More than 1 out of 5 is too many. Remember that PDF documents are to be treated as published materials, as they almost always have a date and page numbers.
