Topic 1 DQ 1

Nursing practice problems are situations encountered during nursing practice and mainly focus on patient care like health education, assessment, recovery, support, and trauma prevention. In contrast, medical practice problems focus mainly on the patient’s medical conditions. This means that medical practice problems focus on a patient’s pathology, while nursing practice problems are mostly discovered as nurses conduct their assessments on patient’s health conditions. Moreover, nursing practice problems examine how the human body responds to present health conditions (Ellis, 2019). For example, a patient may seek a medical checkup with fatigue, fever, headache, and other body pains. As a result, a nurse can refer to the condition as a nursing practice problem, after which they conduct the necessary diagnosis to the patient. On the contrary, when a patient visits a healthcare center with conditions requiring assessment of their pathology, and the caregiver diagnoses the condition as stroke, the situation is termed a medical practice problem.

A PICOT question addresses different nursing care elements, and therefore, it should be mainly based more on the nursing practice problem but not the medical practice problem (Fowler et al., 2021). When focusing on the nursing practice problem, the type of care required by the patient from the time they arrive in hospital, to when the doctor diagnoses their condition, to after the treatment is administered are all addressed. Also, in a nursing practice problem, the patient’s personal information is collected, which helps in the decision-making process and also when arriving at conclusions depending on the PICOT questions. Consequently, this makes it easy to gather a lot of information concerning the patient and their health condition. Also, the general population health is likely to be improved by PICOT, especially when using the nursing practice problem.
