Typically you would hire a statistician to complete this portion of the research study. Quantitative research has statistical data where as Qualitative research usually does not and most researchers who do qualitative research do their own interpretations of the data they have gathered. As a researcher you should familiar with the different typed of data so that you can understand what results mean. Chapter 22 reviews how statistics are used to describe variables. there are 2 types of statistics: Descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics usually focus on the characteristics of the sample. Some of these characteristics include demographics, measurement of knowledge level of a pre test or post test, measurement of improved outcomes based on teaching. So in a nutshell quantitive research will have some descriptive statistics about the subjects you are studying. Inferential statistics focus on the RELATIONSHIP of the variables on the subjects that are being studied. When deciding on a statistical test ask yourself this question: Am I attempting to determine if there is a relationship between my independent and dependent variable? Is there a difference between my groups based on my interventions or am I trying to predict that based on my variable this is what will happen?
