Foundations of nursing in the community: community- oriented practice

One of the major problems to healthcare is limited access to care due to cost. According to The United States Census Bureau, in 2018, 8.5% or 27.5 million people in the USA are uninsured. Stanhope & Lancaster states, “The typical uninsured person is a member of the workforce or a dependent of the worker” (2014, p. 131). For example, a dental hygienist is a career on the rise, however many new graduates are only being offered part time work without health benefits because the cost is too high to cover for the employer. Consequently, this cause and effect results individuals without health insurance and to pay out of pocket is not affordable. High cost for healthcare coverage is root of all evil. The Affordable Care Act although provided affordable healthcare, many providers would not participate because of the low reimbursement. The cause and effect with this are we have health insured people without a healthcare provider which seeks routine healthcare in the emergency department with no cost. Healthcare issues has been complicated and lowering cost and tax would be ideal. Pharmaceutical companies should not be allowed to not triple the cost of medication and medical devices. What also work is preventative investment in health outcomes. Stanhope & Lancaster state, “A more proactive investment in disease prevention and health promotion targeted at improving heath behaviors, lifestyle, and the environment has the potential to improve the health status of populations, thereby improving quality of life while reducing health care costs”(2014, p 133).
