Does the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) predict depression as defined by the Beck Inventory Depression Scale (BDI) in a sample of elderly Korean Americans?

Instrumentation and Operationalization of Constructs For published instruments provide: • Name of developer(s) and year of publication. • Appropriateness to the current study. • Permission from developer to use the instrument (permission letter should be included in an appendix). • Published reliability and validity values relevant to their use in the study. • Where and/or with what populations the instrument was previously used and how validity/reliability are/were established in the study sample.

The purpose of this study is to determine if the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is a valid and reliable measure compared to screening tool (BDI) to identify depression in elderly Korean Americans. The ultimate goal of the study is a referral to appropriate services.

The researcher attempted to address the following questions: RQ1: Does the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) predict depression as defined by the Beck Inventory Depression Scale (BDI) in a sample of elderly Korean Americans? RQ2: Is the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) an effective assessment tool in measuring depression in elderly Korean Americans. H1 1: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) will identify individuals with depression when compared to the results of the Beck Inventory Depression Scale (BDI). RQ3: What value of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) produces the same sensitivity and specificity to depression on the BDI? H13: A higher cut of the score on the PHQ-9 will be necessary to accurately-assess and detect depression in elderly Korean Americans.
