POST 1 (TINA)

Health Concerns and Health Statistics of the Population

For the present study, the U.S population is selected. There are many health concerns regarding population. The health concerns involve mental illness, environmental quality, substance abuse, bulky and obesity, tobacco usage, HIV/AIDS, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, injury, and violent behavior. The health statistics of the US population are recorded recently. The female’s life expectancy in the US is 81 and males’ life expectancy is 76 in the year 2017. In the US, 2813503 resident mortalities are recorded in 2017. About 22335 deaths of children are recorded in 2017 (Murphy, Xu, Kochanek & Arias, 2018). The main cause of infants’ death is maternal complications. Another main cause of death is an infected circulatory system. Respiratory diseases are common among the US population that results in a large mortality rate.

Cultural Aspects of the Culture

The cultural aspects of the US population are quite distinct. The culture of the US focuses on shaping the mind of their people in a way to think big. ‘To go’ the concept is quite common among Americans. Many people in the US tend to eat their food in the hustle. People are not in favor to cook food in the US. The main reason is that they find no time to cook food because the majority of the population is doing a job (Bray & Glauberman, 2018). They do smart talk and like to remain in the competition. Most of the people are independent in the US.

Potential of Nursing Role

The potential of the nursing role in the population is quite noteworthy. The culturally sensitive intervention for the US population includes alcohol abuse control, energy conservation, infection control, sleep pattern control, positioning therapy, and compliance with nutrition.

POST 2 (Kristen)

The population that I chose to discuss is the Hispanic population. The leading cause of death in this population is diabetes. “Hispanics are about 50% more likely to die from diabetes than whites” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). One cultural aspect that accounts for the high rate of diabetes in this population is that most of the Hispanic cultures foods can be high in fat and calories. As nurses, it important that we are culturally sensitive when educating these patients. One of the nursing roles we could use is the teach back technique.  “Some cultural barriers may be overcome by using the “teach back” technique to ensure that directions are correctly understood and by creating a welcoming health care environment for these patients” (Juckett, 2013). The teach back technique helps nurses understand the health literacy of patients to know when more explanations are necessary. It is important that we are provide culturally competent care to improve patient outcomes.
